Planting Nasturtium
Nasturtiums are sun loving edible flowers. Direct seed outdoors in a well drained location after the danger of frost has passed. They prefer soil on the dry side and grow well in poor to average soil. Sow seeds at 1/2 inch deep and 10 to 12 inches apart.
Growing Nasturtium
For optimum growth, add a general fertilizer in mid season. Deadhead blooms to promote new flowers and to maintain an attractive appearance.
Harvesting and Storing Nasturtium
Harvest leaves as soon as several leaves are on the plant as tender young leaves taste better than older ones. The flowers are also edible, but have less taste. Both blossoms and leaves have the spicy flavor of cress.
Nasturtium Insect and Disease Information
Nasturtiums are aphid magnets; wash the flowers thoroughly before using. Mold and fungus disease can occur in hot, humid weather. Apply a vegetable appropriate insecticides or fungicides only as needed.
